Puerto Rican choreographer Nahir Medina from Ballets de San Juan announced her retirement as Artistic Director for the company after 17 years of having the position. She presented her final choreography on April 24th, 2021 with her piece titled “Destellos” which represented her emotions about dance. Within her piece were three sections representing freedom, love, and joy. I had the opportunity of being one of the 32 dancers included in this piece, since Mrs. Medina selected students from the Ballets de San Juan school to join the company for the piece. I’ve known Mrs. Medina for years and she is truly a wonderful choreographer and an inspiring woman. Learning in the final days of rehearsals that she was announcing her retirement was sad to hear, but she assured us that she would still be working with Ballets de Adam Juan in another position. I’m eager to see how the company develops and adjusts as a new person takes the role of artistic director. For now, however, all we can do is wait and see. Until then, stay tuned!
